The Nature Conservancy California (TNC CA) is a leading environmental nonprofit, with a reputation as a leader within the TNC organization and the greater conversation movement. Through evidence-based science and innovative conservation strategies, TNC CA addresses the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss threatening the critical ecosystems, native species, and natural wonders that define The Golden State.

Just two years after completing a nine-figure portion of a $1 billion global campaign, TNC CA was keen to take a moment and learn from its campaign’s success—to reflect on how far it had moved the dial from its previous campaign and consider what it would take to prepare for the next one. Eager to maintain post-campaign momentum, TNC CA’s team of experienced and passionate frontline fundraisers hoped to solidify their growth from the campaign work, prioritize the department’s needs and responsibilities, and determine how to build up the pipeline needed for their major gifts program beyond the campaign.

Since 2007, Campbell & Company has been in close partnership and engagement with TNC CA, providing support at various moments of opportunity for the organization.  

The development assessment, an exercise in post-campaign review, revealed areas of opportunity to streamline performance goals, build management capacity, translate complex conservation issues to donor-impact opportunities, and encourage growth-focused portfolios. Based on detailed donor analytics and extensive data-gathering, we delivered nine core recommendations to help TNC CA improve its communications, simplify reporting, and focus on prospecting, which involved identifying and evaluating potential donors. 

Leveraging these recommendations and in anticipation of a near-future campaign, TNC CA retained Campbell & Company to conduct a training to further equip its frontline fundraisers with the strategies needed to activate a healthy pipeline of major gift donors and create a pipeline of major gift officers. Our training session, an interactive workshop grounded in adult-learning practices, invited TNC CA’s team to focus on what investments and structures would move donors up the pyramid. We addressed models for comparable organizations, strategies for building much needed consensus and buy-in among fundraising leaders, and, most importantly, the steps needed to move into a best-in-class model.

The Nature Conservancy in Illinois

The Nature Conservancy in Illinois (TNC in IL) is a business unit within The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a global organization whose vision is a world where the diversity of life thrives, and people act to conserve nature for its own sake and its ability to fulfill our needs and enrich our lives. For more than 60 years, TNC in IL has worked with communities to help protect the sun-kissed prairies, shady oak savannas, tranquil forests and freshwater systems of Illinois, bringing people together to help solve the state’s biggest conservation challenges, from climate change and habitat loss to protecting clean water. The Nature Conservancy in Illinois has built an effective state-wide conservation program that has done tremendous work, including protecting and restoring almost 90,000 acres of nature across the state. As part of this growth, they have partnered with Campbell & Company to complete successful fundraising campaigns, the last of which was the largest in TNC in IL’s history and supported both Illinois and Global priorities. 

What We Heard

Having already partnered with TNC in IL on a range of successful fundraising projects, they were looking to develop specific recommendations for fundraising sustainability and growth in the business unit. To ensure the organization was maximizing the potential of all its resources, TNC in IL requested an analysis of staff roles, technology, methods, processes, and procedures with coordinated suggestions to maximize fundraising in preparation for a comprehensive campaign.

Our Impact

Through a review of TNC in IL’s donor prospects, we provided detailed recommendations on prospect prioritization, pipeline and portfolio development, and staffing. Recognizing the challenge of achieving its goals due to the variability in principal and major gifts, we recommended a strategic shift towards concentrating on donors in the $100,000 to $999,999 range, aiming to convert them into consistent annual contributors. Our work culminated in a comprehensive report with tools to achieve annual contributed revenue growth, including recommended investments, prospect strategies, and goals and metrics to secure support to meet TNC in IL’s annual goals for the next five years.

As we began planning for our next campaign, we realized there was a need to assess our development team’s resources, roles, and processes in order to more clearly develop a strategy to ensure growth and financial stability. We contracted with Campbell & Company to help us analyze our portfolios, tools, procedures, and staff roles and deliver recommendations that we are using to help improve our portfolio health and move us closer to meeting market potential.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Bay Area

For 45 years, RMHC Bay Area has partnered with children’s health care providers in the Bay Area to keep families together and near the medical care their ill or injured children need, when and where they need it most.

Today, RMHC Bay Area serves critically ill children through a network of Ronald McDonald House Charites programs that provide housing, meals, and psychosocial support inside or nearby Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in San Francisco and Oakland.

What We Heard

RMHC Bay Area was planning a new campaign to ensure every major children’s hospital in the Bay Area has a comprehensive range of housing, meal, and support services; to tackle the crisis of food insecurity for families with children in the hospital; and to launch new technology, programs, and partnerships to help families find the resources they need. To make this possible, RMHC sought to build the first comprehensive Ronald McDonald House Program for families and children at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, create Family Rooms at each of its partner hospitals, expand its regional meal program serving children’s hospitals and clinics throughout the Bay Area, and ensure a holistic approach to family support through new partnerships and resources.

With a strategic plan already in place, RMHC was looking for a partner to determine the amount of capital to be raised in support of RMHC’s plans, develop compelling campaign communications for a multi-phase campaign, and help RMHC connect with new corporate and community partners in the Oakland area.

Our Impact

Campbell & Company validated RMHC’s $30 million goal to rally support for its campaign priorities and built a campaign plan to provide a roadmap to a successful campaign. In addition, we developed a powerful campaign vision, case for support, and messaging to engage stakeholders and build a foundation for effective communication throughout RMHC’s campaign, named By Your Side. Lastly, we provided recommendations for RMHC’s organizational structure by creating a stronger staffing model to engage donors and build stronger donor connectivity, in an effort to engage donors both by serving families in the house and connecting donors with others that are interested in the mission.

Results

Using the data captured from a capacity analysis of potential donors, Campbell & Company mapped out a model to strengthen donor relationships through enhanced relationship management. We also implemented Campbell & Company’s proprietary software Beam Insights, providing RMHC Bay Area quantitative analysis and real time reporting and insight into the philanthropic potential of their donor community. Our roadmap toward campaign success for the 30M initiative kicked off successfully with the support of RMHC Bay Area’s Board upon completion of the campaign planning study.

About Guthrie Theater

The Guthrie Theater engages exceptional theater artists in the exploration of both classic and contemporary plays connecting the community we serve to one another and to the world. Through its extraordinary artists, staff and facility, the Guthrie is committed to the people of Minnesota, and from its place, rooted deeply in the Twin Cities, influences the field as a leading 21st century arts organization.

What We Heard

Like nearly all of its peers, the Guthrie’s operations were significantly impeded by the COVID-19 pandemic; the theater has continued to work to rebuild its live audience even as the pandemic has receded. Major gifts were critical to the Guthrie during this challenging time, but the development team observed that it was more difficult than they expected to secure meetings with prospective donors who “looked like” good major gift prospects based on their capacity and giving history. They urgently needed to understand which prospects their lean team should focus on and forecast what the organization might expect from these donors in current and deferred gifts.

Our Impact

Campbell & Company pulled a range of data from Tessitura that would help analyze each constituent’s engagement with the Guthrie and developed a custom engagement score based on how they interacted with the Guthrie before, during, and after the height of the pandemic. We used these scores and the donor’s capacity and giving history to forecast their gift amounts and demonstrate where the Guthrie should focus in order to reach its fundraising goals.

We also analyzed the Guthrie’s planned giving expectancy file in order to assess how recent efforts to reinvigorate its planned giving society might impact the amount of annual endowment draws in future years, based on the forecasted realization of planned gifts.

Results

The Guthrie is proceeding with its fundraising plans, with a stronger prospect list and a more realistic sense of what contribution might be expected from the individuals on the list. The analysis identified a segment of highly-engaged patrons with strong capacity who were not managed by Guthrie staff; the team is taking steps to qualify and cultivate these individuals, who are key to the future major gift pipeline.

Uncovering inefficiencies and identifying opportunity 

Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences needed a reliable and automated set of reports to provide new insights and reduce staff time spent on ad hoc reporting. They also wanted an easy way to identify constituents who were showing increasing or very high levels of engagement and were not yet being managed by ACPHS staff and to identify constituents who were engaged but who were not yet making gifts of support. 

Targeted insights and custom tools

Campbell & Company created a suite of automated dashboards in Entrinsik Informer.  The dashboards provide a daily view of campaign donations, board giving, alumni donor retention, donations by constituency, opportunity pipeline, and opportunity yield analysis. In addition to providing targeted and helpful insights, these dashboards save staff time that was previously spent creating ad hoc reports. 

Campbell & Company also developed an alumni engagement score for ACPHS that automatically refreshes and is displayed in a custom built application, identifying alumni who have recently increased their engagement or who are highly engaged but not yet managed.  These tools will allow ACPHS to further their goal by focusing on engaging the right constituents at the right time.

The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health welcomes children and families who come to the world’s foremost medical research center seeking hope, healing, and answers. All families whose children receive treatment or participate in clinical trials at the NIH stay can stay at the Inn for free—but the Inn is much more than a convenient, affordable place to stay. It’s a support system for people grappling with the unthinkable, a place with insightful therapies, and a home for healing with programs and activities to help cope.

A Small Building with Significant Impact

Capturing the scope of what The Inn does for children and families and the role it plays in advancing medical breakthroughs was a complex task. The case for support needed to reflect the Inn’s impact on children, families, the community, the NIH, and the world—and describe the impact that philanthropy can make at every level.

Fundraising Collateral that Gets Results

To develop The Inn’s case for support, Campbell & Company led the Inn through an inclusive, collaborative process involving staff, volunteers, grateful patients, NIH clinicians, chaplains, and Board members. With their insight and guidance, Campbell & Company developed a presentation deck and print piece to help leadership and fundraisers tell the story of the organization. When we began work on Overlake’s campaign, we knew that anything we did had to capture the unique character and voice of the school: a place with a stunning campus tucked inside a grove of trees outside of Seattle, a tight-knit community of teachers, families, and students with strong personal relationships, and boundless opportunities for students to explore their interests in and outside of the classroom.

The Foundation: A Campaign Name and Theme

For our first challenge together, we worked with our partners at Overlake to build a campaign identity that students, parents, and faculty could see and hear and think: this is us. Doors to Discovery brings to life what is already flourishing at Overlake—the sense that every student can discover themselves and their passions—and the excitement around all of the new discoveries their campaign will make possible.

With the theme of discovery at Overlake as our foundation, we wove together a cohesive story of Overlake’s campaign that captured its urgency and vision and why it matters for students. This image—and message-driven presentation has equipped school leaders to truly convey the campaign plans at an overarching level—whether in a staged presentation or in one-on-one conversations.

Leave-behind: The Brochure

Overlake’s campaign brings together three distinct projects under a larger vision for the school. To capture it all, we designed a print piece that tucks three project inserts into a larger visionary brochure. Chicago History Museum

When the Chicago History Museum (CHM) asked us if we wanted to partner with them on a truly historical capital campaign, we jumped at the chance to be tourists amidst the lore of our own city. What started with a brainstorm on our personal points of Chicago pride (absolutely no ketchup on hot dogs, Lake Michigan, Honest Abe, and Oprah) became a deeper dive into the spirit that makes our city pulse—and the inspiration to reframe the museum in donors’ minds.

We landed on a bold yet welcoming campaign name, This is Chicago, anchored by a simple message that resonated throughout the CHM community: everything that makes Chicago Chicago flows out of our history, and the Chicago History Museum keeps it alive.
