CHICAGO, IL – March 6, 2024 – Campbell & Company, an employee-owned national consulting firm, announces it has been named one of the Top 10 Executive Search Firms for Women of Color for the third consecutive year. This annual program was created by WOC to help women of color gain equal access to job opportunities and recruitment processes.

“Campbell & Company thanks WOC for this recognition and for the valued work they do in the talent community,” states Kris McFeely, Managing Director, Executive Search at Campbell & Company. “We are honored to partner with nonprofits that advance justice, opportunity, and equity throughout our society—and we are proud to bring this same commitment to our search processes.”

The results of Campbell & Company searches reflect our commitment to diversity and equity. 100% of our pools yield diverse candidates. 52% of our overall placements are people of color, and 79% of our overall placements identify as female.

WOC surveyed its members and executive search firms that specialize in or conduct searches within the nonprofit or social sector, identifying ten national firms that are especially noteworthy for their approach to and results when working with women of color. WOC engaged Shinyoung Park, a doctoral candidate at Indiana University Lilly School of Philanthropy for the independent compilation of the ranked list of Top 10 Executive Search Firms for Women of Color.

Search firms and WOC members were asked similar questions to provide a perspective from both sides of an engagement. WOC members were also asked to provide their feedback about firms they engaged as representatives of nonprofit or social sector organizations working to fill a position.

“This recognition inspires us to keep going with our commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in our firm and across the nonprofit sector, including the advancement and support of women of color leading and working in the sector, ”says Campbell & Company Co-President Kate Roosevelt.

WOC published Top 10 Executive Search Firms that Work for Women of Color on February 29, 2024. Visit https://www.woc-fp.com/executive-search-ranking for more information.

Chicago, IL – December 7, 2023 – It is with great sadness that Campbell & Company announces the death of Donald A. Campbell, Jr., CFRE, lifetime philanthropist and founder of our firm. Don passed away on December 5th at his home in Sarasota, FL, with his daughter by his side. Our firm mourns this loss, and we honor the legacy he leaves behind in the fundraising sector. Our deepest sympathies go out to Don’s family.

“Don was a true visionary. He invested in the not-for-profit sector and its people throughout his life – with financial gifts and gifts of his time,” shares Julia McGuire, Co-President.

Don founded Campbell & Company, along with Edith Falk, as a national fundraising consulting firm for nonprofit organizations in Chicago, Illinois, in 1976. He retired from active management of the firm in 2006, but never stopped being committed to the firm and the profession.

Throughout a more than four-decade career, Don made an indelible mark on the sector, having personally been associated with campaigns and programs that have generated more than $3 billion in philanthropy. Don served as the chair of the national Association of Fundraising Professionals twice and was presented with AFP’s Founder’s Medallion to honor his dedication to the profession and organization. He also served as the President of AFP’s Chicago Chapter, starting the tradition of Campbell employees serving in this role, and was the inaugural recipient of the President’s Award for distinguished service to the fundraising profession.

In January 2023, the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy appointed the first Donald A. Campbell Chair in Fundraising Leadership endowed chair, an opportunity made possible by a generous gift from its namesake. You can learn more here.

Giving in 2022 reaches 499.33 billion

Through the Giving Institute, The Giving USA Foundation, in partnership with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, today released its longest-running, most comprehensive report on philanthropy in the United States, Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy.

According to the latest Annual Report, U.S. charitable giving totaled $499.33 billion, a 3.4 percent decrease in dollars from 2021. Influenced by the stock market and the highest inflation rate in 40 years, giving by individuals, foundations, corporations, and bequests had mixed results. In 2022, the S&P 500® dipped 19.4 percent year-over-year [1], and disposable personal income decreased 0.1 percent [2] while GDP grew 9.2 percent [3], all in current dollars. These three economic indicators – all closely tied to charitable giving – led to post-pandemic shifts in sources of giving and an overall dampening effect on giving in 2022.

“While we are disappointed giving declined in 2022, it is noteworthy that, after two consecutive record years of giving and in a difficult economic atmosphere, Americans gave nearly half a trillion dollars to charity in 2022. I remain very bullish on the generosity of Americans while also noting some challenges we have in the data presented to us this year,” said Peter Fissinger, Senior Advisor at Campbell & Company and Chair of The Giving Institute.

According to the Giving USA’s 2022 Annual Report:

  • There is a shift in how people are propelling philanthropy. While individuals made up 64 percent of total giving, donor-advised funds grew at a rapid pace. Foundations (half of all giving in this category is family foundations) accounted for 21 percent, bequests for 9 percent, and corporations for 6 percent of total giving. Though these categories of giving declined when adjusted for high inflation, corporations and foundations experienced positive two-year growth.
  • Giving by individuals reached 319.04 billion in 2022, down 6.4 percent from last year. Mega-gifts by individuals contributed $14 billion in 2022 and represented about 5 percent of all giving by individuals for the second year in a row. The drop in individual giving was seen by both smaller and larger ($50,000 or more) donors, which was a departure from past years when the number of donors decreased while the total dollars given increased.
  • Giving by type of recipient organization had mixed results. Some subsectors, including education, human services, public-society benefit, and environment/animals, declined in total share of giving after reaching record highs during the pandemic era. Religion, healthcare, arts and culture, and human services organizations grew, but not enough to outpace the 8 percent inflation rate.
  • Growth in giving to international affairs and foundations outpaced inflation. Influenced by international crises, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, giving to international affairs (up 1.9 percent) and giving to foundations (up 2.7 percent) both reached the highest giving level on record when adjusted for inflation.
  • The resilience and innovation developed in the pandemic era will continue to serve nonprofits. Nonprofits can continue to evolve by growing online giving through mobile devices; building the future pipeline of donors and sustaining existing donors; and adapting to new AI tools such as ChatGPT to offer new possibilities for nonprofits, fundraisers, and donors. Still, human connection remains the foundation of philanthropy.

Optimistically, the nonprofit sector must continue to make the case for its vital work and the broad-based philanthropy that has traditionally supported it, while adapting to and continually evolving with advancements in technology and an increasingly diverse donor population.

Chicago, IL – June 8, 2023 Campbell & Company, an employee-owned national consulting firm with expertise in helping organizations create greater impact through fundraising, communications, strategic information services, and executive search, today announces the promotion of Katelyn Martin to Managing Director of Strategic Information Services (SIS). Martin succeeds Carrie Dahlquist, who has led the SIS practice since its inception in April 2011.

Martin has been with Campbell & Company since 2013, most recently serving as the Associate Director of SIS. In her new role as Managing Director, Martin will be accountable for the continuing growth of this vital area of Campbell & Company’s business – supporting the growing team of analysts and technical professionals, building awareness of the team’s capabilities in the market, and continuing to partner with clients.

When SIS started as a practice at our firm over ten years ago, we envisioned how using data and systems would transform our sector,” states Carrie Dahlquist, former Managing Director, now Senior Counsel. “That trend has only accelerated, and I’m thrilled that Katelyn will lead our team as we continue to support our clients.”

After creating the Strategic Information Services (SIS) practice and successfully leading it for 12 years, Carrie Dahlquist begins an exciting chapter in her new role as Senior Counsel, focusing on complex projects and supporting innovative strategies to help organizations understand how data can drive strategic planning and campaign management.

With over ten years of experience, Martin has counseled clients across all sectors in roles ranging from prospect management counsel to interim development staff support. She brings an analytical yet empathetic approach to her client engagements. She takes particular interest in leveraging data to influence decision-making and in developing systems and processes to ensure rewarding donor experiences and great fundraising outcomes.

Martin’s development experience prior to joining Campbell & Company in 2013 included roles with the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana and the Boston Children’s Chorus. Previously, she was a consultant with The Hackett Group, a management consulting firm serving a wide array of Fortune 500 clients.

“I am excited to be leading this innovative, collaborative team. “I think we really shine working in partnership with our clients – I look forward to helping them use their data, technology systems, and operational processes to support strategic decision-making within development and across the organization,” states Katelyn Martin, Managing Director.
